PSI Start application information
Applications are now closed. The 2023 Summer Class is now full. Application information for PSI Start 2024 will be posted here in November.
Important dates the 2024 PSI Start Program selection process:
- Application opens: December 2023
- Application deadline: January 15, 2024 (applications may be considered after this deadline until all positions are filled)
- Reference forms deadline: January 29, 2024
- Selection timeline: Online school attendees and interns will be selected by the end of February 2024.
Who should apply?
We accept excellent students who intend to start a graduate program in theoretical physics in 2024. Students should have some knowledge of classical and quantum mechanics before the start of the program. For questions about eligibility and special exceptions, please contact us at [email protected].
The Institute offers positions to researchers and students of any nationality who are displaced or at risk in their home countries or their intended place of work/study.
Documents to be submitted with the online application:
- Transcripts:
- If transcripts are in a language other than English, an English translation is required.
- Unofficial transcripts downloaded from the student’s institution are sufficient.
- Unofficial English translations are sufficient.
- Curriculum Vitae.
- Minimum of two reference letters (maximum of three), referees are asked to include in the letter information on the candidate’s abilities and motivation, academic background, and group collaboration skills.
- Statement of interest (limited to two pages).
- An optional equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) statement, where you are invited to share any information that will help the admissions committee evaluate your application holistically. This information could include obstacles you have overcome, extenuating circumstances, information about actions you have taken to increase equity, diversity, or inclusion, or any other information that you deem relevant.
Within the application, students will be required to self-declare their level of English proficiency. Applicants may be contacted for an English proficiency interview.
Financial support for the PSI Start Program
Research interns will be paid through a Research Award. Perimeter Institute will also cover economy travel expenses between each intern’s home institution and Toronto Pearson Airport. Ground transportation from Toronto Pearson Airport to Perimeter Institute will also be provided. Interns will be provided with credit at Perimeter Institute’s Black Hole Bistro to use for weekday lunch meals (excluding holidays).
While there are no participation fees for the online school, Perimeter Institute recognizes that participation in an online program may be a financial burden to some students. Financial support, such as funding for IT equipment, is available to participants based on their needs.
